Just like anything else, if you work with it for awhile it will be a GREAT tool for you. At first it is really hard to deal with, but you should overcome it after a few tries. Don't give up so quickly, again just like most scrapbooking tools it takes time to perfect it!
Frustrating for children to use: 
This tool is craptastic. The plastic shield encircling the knife prevents the user from cutting accurately. The cutting mat is nothing more than a small piece of plasticized paper. You're better off using a real self healing mat. It's disappointing that scrap book companies haven't created a child proof exacto knife. Gotta Be Kidding!:
This item was a complete disappointment. I got it along with the Crayola project kits for my 8 y/o for Christmas. Forget an 8 y/o...I couldn't make it work satisfactorily either. Back to the drawing board, Crayola!
